When it comes to developing world-class football skills, mastering the basics is the key to long-term success. In this mini-series, we'll break down the fundamental skills every player needs to develop a strong technical foundation. Today, we’re starting with one of the most important aspects of football: Close Ball Control.

Why Close Ball Control Matters
A player with excellent close control can:
✅ Keep possession under pressure
✅ Move quickly in tight spaces
✅ Beat defenders with skill and precision
✅ Stay composed when receiving passes
From tight dribbles to quick turns, having full control over the ball is what separates great players from the rest. That’s why top professionals—Messi, Iniesta, and Modric—spent years perfecting their close control.
Drills to Improve Close Ball Control
Here are three essential drills to help you develop a sharper touch and better ball control. These can all be practiced at home or on the training ground using the FSKILLS Ball Mastery Mat.
1. Sole Rolls (Basic & Advanced)
👉 How to do it:
Place the ball under your right foot and roll it across your body.
Stop it with your left sole and roll it back.
Keep the movement smooth and controlled.
🎯 Coaching Tip: Start slow, then increase speed while keeping the ball close.
2. Inside-Outside Touches
👉 How to do it:
Tap the ball with the inside of your foot, then push it back with the outside.
Keep alternating feet, focusing on quick touches.
🎯 Coaching Tip: Stay light on your toes and keep your eyes up as you progress.
3. V-Pulls (Pull-Push Movement)
👉 How to do it:
Pull the ball back with the sole of your foot, then push it diagonally forward using the inside.
Repeat with the other foot, creating a "V" shape.
🎯 Coaching Tip: This drill mimics real-game movement when shielding the ball or changing direction.
