Breaking Down the Basics Part 2: First Touch Mastery

A player’s first touch can make or break a play. A great first touch sets up the next move—whether it’s a dribble, pass, or shot. A poor first touch? It gives defenders an easy chance to win the ball.

In this post, we’ll break down the importance of first touch, key techniques, and drills to improve it.

Why First Touch Matters

A great first touch allows you to:

✅ Keep possession under pressure

✅ Create space before defenders close in

✅ Play faster and with more confidence

✅ Set up passes, dribbles, and shots more effectively

Watch any top player—De Bruyne, Modric, Messi—and you’ll see how their first touch sets them up for success in every situation.

Types of First Touch & When to Use Them

🔹 Cushioned Touch – Using the inside of the foot to softly control the ball when receiving a pass.

🔹 Outside Touch – Taking the first touch with the outside of the foot to shift direction quickly.

🔹 Sole Stop – Using the sole of the foot to control a pass when under pressure.

🔹 Directional Touch – Taking a first touch into space to prepare for the next action.

Drills to Improve First Touch

These drills can be practiced at home or in training using the FSKILLS Ball Mastery Training Mat to stay within a tight control zone.

1. Wall Pass & First Touch Control

👉 How to do it:

  • Pass the ball against a wall and control the return pass with one touch.

  • Vary the foot surface used (inside, outside, sole).

🎯 Coaching Tip: Keep a light touch—don’t let the ball get away from you.

2. Juggling & First Touch Variations

👉 How to do it:

  • Start juggling and introduce different first touches (inside, outside, thigh control).

  • Focus on keeping the ball close and under control.

🎯 Coaching Tip: Control the ball downward, not upward—this prepares you for real-game situations.

3. Partnered Pass & Move

👉 How to do it:

  • Have a partner (or use a wall) pass the ball to you at different speeds and angles.

  • Control the ball with one touch and pass it back.

🎯 Coaching Tip: Scan the area before receiving—train yourself to check your surroundings.
